Ba6 project

For my BA6 project I have decided to do concept art including two characters and two environments based on the book The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer. The reason I chose a book is because of my desire to allow people to enjoy stories with the same amount of detail given in the novel especially to those who don't enjoy reading but wants to be immersed in new worlds. By having strict guidelines from the descriptions in the book it give me more of a challenge.

My first move was to skim read the book and collect all the descriptions of each location and character which I thought was significant. below is the list of descriptions I found.
Characters:
Goldilocks and porridge:
  • A cream-coloured horse
  • It picked up its hooves in a peculiar manner, as if it had been trained to tiptoe.
  • She was young and beautiful
  • Her eyes were big and blue, and her hair was half up and flowed into long, golden curls. She wore a long maroon knit coat with black leggings and very tall boots.
  • She drew a large sword
Queen red riding hood:
  • A very pretty young woman around the same age as Jack
  • She had bright blue eyes and blonde hair that was done up glamorously behind her crown.
  • She wore a long, red gown with a matching hooded cape and a pink corset
  • A necklace with a massive diamond
  • Her shoulders completely bare
  • A long pair of gloves with a dozen sparkly rings on her fingers
  • She was showing too much skin, wearing too make-up, and was dressed too well for the middle of the day.
  • Another dress- her dress was so big big and layered that she wasn’t harmed from being dragged
Cinderella:
  • Auburn hair and styled up behind a crystal tiara.
  • Wore white gloves and a long turquoise gown flowed down around her, accentuating  her pregnant belly. Despite all the gold and the glorious handelier, her eyes and smile were the brightest things in  the room.

Bobblewart andEgghorn:
Both frightening
Both had big, pointy ears that stuck out on the side of their heads-

  • Bobblewart the troll:
  • Low, growly voice
  • small
  • Fat and frumpy
  • Huge nose and horns

  • Egghorn the goblin
  •  high-pitched, raspy voice
  • Tall
  • Gangly and thin
  • Big yellow eyes
  • Pea-green skin

Froggy:
  • "could best be described as a frog man. He was tall, with a wide face, big, glossy, and shiny green skin. He wore a three-piece suit and carried a large glass jar of lily pads…. Very wide smile"
Charlie:
  • Very attractive man
  • Dark hair and eyes that illuminated the entire room

"the fairy godmother waved her and, and the curse cast upon him blew away like dandelion seeds in the wind.

The evil queen:
  • "it was the face of a woman who had once been queen. Now, the woman sitting before her was just a prisoner  whose looks had faded into a permanent, sorrowful scowl
  • Her face was plain, but it was a plainness that had so much potential for beauty had time and circumstance allowed it.
  • Her eyes were dark and bleak; she seemed empty and cold down to the soul.

Troll princess, trollbella:
  • Same age as twins
  • Round face with a small snout
  • Her hair was worn in pigtails just below tiny horns
Sleeping beauty:
  • Wore a tiara made of silver flowers
  • Lon, flowing, golden hair
  • Thin gown a shade of pale rose with matching gloves
BridgeTroll:
  • Large, short and very wide with a enormous head.
  • Covered in matted fur with large eyesand a snout.
  • His arms and legs are tiny
  • Nails and teeth were sharp and long
overall there is two types of ways i could go in my project, one is to choose characters with minimal descriptions to allow me to explore more creative and stranger ideas or use the most descriptive and work within the guidelines as a more challenging project.
This cannot be said for the environments which are immensely detailed as seen below:

Froggys house:
  • Some dead vines growing over  large wooden door  that was camouflaged into the side of a small hill.
  • It was very dark underground.
  • Lit a lamp with a match
  • In a large room with dirty walls and a low, dirty ceiling. Roots from a tree growing above them grew down like a chandelier.
  • A cluster of big, cushy chairs and sofas- many of the cushions had the stuffing sticking out of them- sat in the center on ther room and were angled to face a small fireplace. Nearby, teacups and pots hung from hooks over a tiny kitchenette.
  • Shelves of books lined the dirt walls;  piles of books were stacked on every available surfce and on the ground; it was as if the room were infested with literature.
  • Tea kettle, water pitcher, big white chair

Red riding hood kingdom
  • A unmistakable brick wall of gigantic proportions. Thirty feet tall and made from enormous grey bricks
  • Rolling hills of farmland , cows and sheep grazing across fields
The town:
  • Filled with tiny cottage homes and shops  made of bricks or stone walls and hay roofs.
  • A old schoolhouse with steeple
  • Staff wielding men, bonnet wearing women
  • Stores and shops- henny penny bank, jacks horner's pie shop, and the pat-a-cake bakery, the shoe inn (a boot of gigantic proportions turned into a working hotel.
  • In the center  of the town was a grassy park that hosted several memorials and monuments.
  • A small brick wall by itself had a golden plaque it said: sir humpty dumpty's wall"
  • Past Dumpty's wall was a small hill with a well on top of it a sign pointing to the hill said: jack and jill hill.
  •   middle of park was a circular fountain. A statue of a young shepherd boy stood in the center of it and water poured from the mouths of the sheep that were under him. The carved dedication of the fountain read: in memory of the boy who cried wolf, you were a liar, but you were loved.

The castle
  •  had four tall towers that could be seen from anywhere In town.
  • Had red walls with dark red roofs. A moat circled the castle and had its own water mill. The moat up close  around it was small that it was easy to step over.
  • The castle was only made to look big
  • Castle's entrance a set of large wooden doors.
Inside castle
  • A long room with tall windows on both sides
  • Walls covered in more portraits of the queen
  • Looking up from the floor was a giant wolf head with red eyes and a set of sharp teeth. A wolf-skin rug spread out on the floor
  • At the very end of the room a large throne.

Cinderella's castle:
  • It was perfectly symmetrical and smooth
  • As if made out of sky-gray porcelain
  • Prominent towers in the middle of the palace shared a base with a gigantic clock large enough for the whole kingdom to see.
  • Almost seemed fake, so majestic and grander

Inside:
  • At the end of a hall a pair of golden doors into the ballroom.
  • Ballroom: so much movement and colour
  • Biggest chandelier they had ever seen, with thousands of candles, hung from the ceiling above an enormous dance floor.
  • Hundreds of formally dressed men and women filled the space. A small orchestra in the corner.
  • Everything from the archways to the accents on the walls was golden.
  • A grand staircase descended in the back of the room just behind two empty thrones.

Queen Cinderella's royal room of display:
  • Two guards on either side of the door (black double doors) a large stone arch above them with a sign that read: 'Queen Cinderella's royal room of display'
  • Was a wide chamber with white pillars and a sky-blue tiled floor.
  • Ceiling was domed and covered in golden stars
  • Room illuminated by moonlight coming from a large window in the back and the reflected through-out by a series of hanging mirrors
  • Several special objects were displayed and placed on the top of short pillars and surrounded by thick glass cases.
  • Brooms, buckets and old raggedy dresses were all put on show
  • Family of mice lived in a glass case in a miniature replica of the palace.
  • In the very center of the room were Cinderella's glass slippers

The troll and goblin territory:
  • There were no trees or buildings or life of any kind.
  • For miles..the land was only littered with piles of rubble and broken bits of stone.
  • A gigantic hole in the ground and traveled down, deep into the earth
  • Smell of mildrew and decay
  • Hundreds of huts and small homes stacked on top of one another.
  • A stone arch with large statues, one of a goblin and one of a troll, on either side ot it. A sign caved into the arched read " be troll, be goblin, or be afraid"
  • The twins were soon driven into a large common room with hundreds of trolls and goblins spread every-where on numerous levels. Some were even hanging from a chandelier.
  • Everything made of stone.

A hidden place:
  • Northern tip of the sleeping kingdom was an ugly and vacant place.
  • Its bare trees, bumpy paths, and dangerously high cliffs.
  • Small stones scattered on the earth
  • Nothing ever grew, impossible for any animals to live there.
  • A small castle surrounded by a deep and empty moat.
  • It was ancient and made of dark bricks, wooden doors, and had been through years of decay
  • The inside of the castle in a thick layer of dust
  • Cobwebs almost as old as the castle were on every windowsill.
  • All the rooms and corridors were empty except for occasional decrepit chair or table placed in a corner.
  • A great hall on the eastern wing of the castle.:
  • Floor length windows bordered the hall, lots of light, they were so old that the glass distorted the out-side world.

My next step is to start on the characters using silhouettes as a starting point and illustrating after.
