The 12 principles of animation number 4#: arcs

an arc is the edge of a section of a circle, if you were to follow the arc it would create a full circle. An example of this in reality is pendulum.
a good example is in kingdom hearts when the protagonist (Sora)  attacks with his keyblade, he uses an arc movement to allow his attack the furthest reach in his field of vision. this also is a good example if anticipation.
bad example: Tetris because when the pieces are being rotated they don't arc they just turn but by not arcing it does not waste time in game play when the pieces are falling down fast.

The 12 principles of animation number 3#: squash and stretch

squash and stretch is used to give an object a feeling of realism by using gravity upon it, a easy example to understand is when a ball gets squashed when it hits the floor and stretches back to its original form as it heads away from the ground. another example that relates to games is how a character can squash and stretch when jumping, running, walking etc.

The 12 principles of animation number 2#: anticipation

anticipation is all about getting ready for an action for example when someone is about to kick a ball they lift there foot aim then kick the ball making it move. a good example is when you are about to slash somebody with your weapon in fable 3 as the character throws their arm back in to a position where they gain strength as the player we know whats going to happen next. in games the anticipation has to be instant to when the player presses the button or else it can look instantaneous instead of believable.
on the other hand final fantasy XIII while in exploration mode the jumping animation seems like an exaggerated hop instead of realistic jump due to the lack of anticipation.
anoth example i recently found was a glitch when climbing in assassin creed 3 the anticipation for the character to climb sometimes upwards sometimes misses a action to make it realistic

the 12 principles of animation: number 1# appeal

the characters have to be appealing to the audience for the audience to take an interest in them; there are several ways to make a character appealing the extremes being really cute like the cats in the kinectimals game for the Xbox 360, to being sardonic or eerie like the little sitters in the Bioshock game.

light and composition

Thomas Kinkade’s painting called “Tinkerbelle and peter fly to Neverland” has three main light sources in this painting Tinkerbelle, Big Ben, the second star and the sun rising in Neverland; with these four source it gives the painting distance and space. Also each main light gives off a different atmosphere the light that’s being created by Tinkerbelle emphasises her magical powers as a fairy, the light from Neverland gives a warmth to the island as it’s a sanctuary as well as giving this warm feeling about the characters made of clouds on the bottom-left. While the star which has a green tinge giving a jealous or evil tone to the characters near to it. The light from Big Ben is a dim light unlike the light from Neverland showing how is a desirable place rather than reality. The shadows in night time London portrays reality as unexciting unlike Neverland which is now waking up and is full of life.  The composition in this painting is iconic placing the main characters e.g. peter pan, Tinkerbelle and the children in the diamond while Neverland takes up the left corner and hook in the right meaning that every  corner there is something interesting to look at. Even the characters direction of flight guides the viewer through the painting.

This painting by Schin Loong shows the light being refracted as the bright light from above transcends into the water below. The refraction allows the light to bounce through the water, scattering the light around the character so the woman looks pure and innocent. While the shadows bellows connects to the birds which seem to be drowning as they sink downwards.  Composition wise the mermaid is upon the cross which is used to stage the main character with opposing forces. This is shown by her human side being at the top nearest to the light while her octopus bottom is under the water in darkness.

Final Image

Before I created my final image i looked at poses to get an idea of how poses give a certain feeling about the character. I looked at how a character can hold their body creates a different feeling. for example the 2nd to the left on the top row shows the figure curled up in a ball, this can suggest that this character is scared or deeply depressed so much so that he has fallen to the ground. while the figure on the top-far right  shows empowerment as the character starts to stand shows proudness and a strong will.
My final Image portray a devastated young woman, this is shown by the expression on her face and the way she is low down on the floor but sh also shows the willingness to not fall completely this is shown by the clenched fist and her feet illustrating that she is going to get up. The black background portrays the darkness in her life that surrounds her while the center spotlight over the princess shows that she is powerful and still hopeful.

Environment

This is my second background for my project, even though I feel like some of my skills have improved such as the sizes of objects in the room I don't feel like i have improved enough to be proud of my work as i can't feel a presence of the room and it doesn't seem realistic enough.

Model Sheet

This is my model sheet for the princess which i think was interesting to do but on the other hand i found that i have made me character very plain in fact. But by being plain it gives a sense of the character as someone who doesn't want to stand out and show of her money and power. It also shows that she is a natural beauty by only giving her a bit of mascara it makes her look like pure person, this personality trait is also helped white shirt, blonde hair and blue ribbon. the white shirt and hair gives a indication of an angelic character this trait is helped with the blue ribbon. With all these traits it creates a stereotypical princess who is native and pure of heart; by this character being put in the situation of seeing her parent being killed in front of her, i gather this personality won't last long and instead be taken over by revenge. This costume gives her perfect cover for what she really feels.

Character Sheet

This is my character sheet which i found easier to do than try to do environments. My favorite expression is the very upset on the bottom row as i think i captured the raw emotion of the character.

1st Environment

This is my first environment I have ever done so i haven't done as well as i thought and I'm leaving it like this as i feel that it won't help my final image but it does give me insight in to the structures and the scale of them.
to create this image I looked at a variety of Manhattan structures which looked old enough to fit into the time period. luckily my time and place of setting. My next environment will be based inside the princess home where the story her story takes place.

mind map for essay

this is my spider diagram  of a game i had never player before called 'Splinter cell' it was an interesting game as you could only sneak around in the darkness with the objective of not being seen. this game on the meter of paedia it would be 1 as its more of a ludus type of game as the player is kept on the certain objectives with no free roaming. overall i did enjoy this game even though i didn't get very far and i will try to play similar games more in the future.

Native American legends

To replace the dogs in the story I decided to look at native American spirits and monsters. this links in well with my 1930's theme as young people started to become interested in their culture and beliefs. the first creature I looked at was a chupacabras:

Appearance

The most common description of chupacabras is a reptile-like creature, appearing to have leathery or scaly greenish-grey skin and sharp spines or quills running down its back. This form stands approximately 3 to 4 feet (1 to 1.2 m) high, and stands and hops in a similar fashion to a kangaroo. In at least one sighting, the creature was reported to hop 20 feet (6 m). This variety is said to have a dog or panther-like nose and face, a forked tongue, and large fangs. It is said to hiss and screech when alarmed, as well as leave behind a sylphic stench. When it screeches, some reports assert that the chupacabras' eyes glow an unusual red which gives the witnesses nausea.

Another description of chupacabras, although not as common, describes a strange breed of wild dog. This form is mostly hairless and has a pronounced spinal ridge, unusually pronounced eye sockets, fangs, and claws. It is claimed that this breed might be an example of a dog-like reptile. Unlike conventional predators, the chupacabra is said to drain all of the animal's blood (and sometimes organs) usually through three holes in the shape of an upside-down triangle or through one or two holes.
Pasted from <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chupacabra>

But decided after looking at some reference pictures that the chupacabra looked similar to a dog so I looked a bit more deeper into the history and myths to find more unusual and stranger creatures. this included looking at the great spirit the creator of the world, a man who turned into a sea serpent, a kachina and a dwarf-like creature.
in the end i chose upon the first creature being a dwarf creature, the second a Gonaquadet and the last the great spirit. this works well in my story as the myths said that any of these creature would accept food, tobacco or sacrifices in exchange to be blessed and protected.

100 Silhouettes

welcome to my blog where i will be blogging my projects for my game art and design course. The first project is transferring the Hans Christian Anderson's Tinderbox into a certain time and place; mine is 1930 America. These are my 100 silhouettes I'm glad to see the development in my drawing as well as the positioning of the body. unfortunately its going to be hard to decide which silhouette to choose. But by thinking about the tinderbox and the personality of the princess i will choose at least 5 silhouettes to explore and detail in colour.
